Recordable DVD formats

Aisha had a quick question about which DVD format is suitable for home produced videos.
For background, I paraphrased the following from here: http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#4.3
There are six recordable versions of DVD:
DVD-R for General, DVD-R for Authoring, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD+R
DVD-R and DVD+R can record data once, like CD-R, whereas DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW can be rewritten [...]

Rendering for widescreen 16:9

Ren asked about whether you can make a 16:9 movie rather than 4:3 for your project. I am fine with this, although it can be a bit fiddly setting it up correctly for a DVD.
There are various standards of widescreen, to aid compatibility with older TV sets.
