Storyboarding
OK, what should your storyboard look like? Storyboards are very personal, and differ massively from the detailed character studies in the Matrix to the stick figures used by many.
Here are some options of what you could include, however as a general guide, think the following: If your storyboard carries enough information for you to trust someone else to make your animation for you (excluding the style), then you have a good storyboard.
-----------------------------------
Images:
• Can be basic because style would normally be explored in seperate character, environment and texture studies.
• Can illustrate framing / staging
• Illustrate key changes in action, framing, atmosphere
• Camera movements can be drawn on as 3D arrows
Video description:
Describe anything missing from your illustrations -
• Transitions - how do we get from one frame to the next?
• Camera framing - use common acronyms (CU: close up, WS: wide shot etc.)
• Camera motion - Pan, dolly, zoom etc.
• Atmosphere - scary...warm...nervous etc.
Audio description:
Describe:
• Spot sounds - sound effects
• Vocals - snorts, shouts, speech etc.
• Music
• Atmosphere - wind, industrial noises etc.
Timing:
You should have a timing row on the storyboard, noting how long each frame (and transition) lasts. This is essential to work out the timing of your animation.
-----------------------------------
When your storyboard is complete, you may like to make an animatic, which helps a lot with timing.

Wow! I would really love to do this. I would kill just TO KNOW how to embark on such a task.
I teach elementary school children in Korea and I know they would love to do and see something like this. Any tips on how someone could get started?? Any sites for inspiration?
Hi Elias, this little post was written for my students a long time ago, when I used to do a storyboarding class as part of a 3D animation course.
It can be great fun and I'd highly recommend it for your school children. I'll see what I can put together for you when I have a bit of time!
