Microreview: I attended the March 09' 27 Dinner, and although I got there late (lost in Durban..) and had to leave early (mad dash to airport..), I could see that there's a great atmosphere due to the well-balanced mix of bloggers, entrepreneurs and developers. It's certainly worth going along next time for a chilled 'industry' night out.

The barcamp has officially been around since August 2005 when a group of friends decided to hold a participant-powered conference in Palo Alto, California. The idea was to have an ‘unconference’ that anyone could host and where everyone could present on topics they were passionate about. Since then, barcamps have been held in over 400+ locations around the world including cities and communities in Africa. They have steadily grown discussions, innovations and ideas that might not have come to light before. While originally a very technical event in focus, they have evolved to cover a vast scope of topics from programming code to the enjoyment of cupcakes.

1971 Citroën DS20 5spd:

As I mentioned in my last cars post, I've really gotten to love old Citroen shapes, which is a complete turnaround from when I was young. One of the most beautiful is of course the DS, a nice white example here for 20k.

1972 Chevrolet El Camino:
R39500 - Cape Town

A great looking Camino, nice and original with 150k on the clock and a straignt 6. So damn pretty (to me..)! Great to see another one for sale, hoping for many more, hopefully some earlier versions.

1966 Volkswagen Kombi Bus:
R10000 - Cape Town

OK, it needs a lick of paint and a few other bits (!) but here's a nice splittie bus shell for a project. I'm wondering how badly affected all these Capetonian cars are with rust, compared to Durbs - presumably Joburg cars are quite sween in comparison on the rust front..?

1968 Mercedes 230 'Fintail':
R16500 - Johannesburg

Original condition, and such a nice shape. So much less aggressive than modern Mercs. He also has a 1965 230S for sale, in need of restoring.

1985 Volkswagen Golf 2.0 8v:
R15000 - Johannesburg

I don't often go for the newer cars, but they're still making these 5dr golfs in SA, so they look nice to me (old look, new car!), but also, I always wanted to shave the doorhandles and install hydraulic poppers on a car as seen here. It's a very oldschool custom trick to clean the lines up, but takes some effort.

1967 Ford Cortina MK2 1600:
R16000 - Johannesburg

Love it! Such a great looking 'tina. I wasn't sure about the colour at first, but must admit it's grown on me. Perhaps it's the sun combined with the orange which does it. Interior looks tidy too.

Kango VW Beach Buggy:
R70000 - Ballito (Durban)

Easily the nicest looking Kango -bodied beach buggy I've seen so far. Usually they look a bit 80's, but here the t-top looks fantastic. It is rather 'expensive', but all so carefully put together. Just down the road from me too! Still think ratty looks better though, hehe...

MK1 Ford Escort 2dr 1300:
R24900 - Johannesburg

Tidy, original looking Mk1 for a reasonable price in a sweet colour. And it's a Gauteng-er so presumably rust-free.

I also find it cool that you kind of get a petrolhead's view of SA's history by finding out what cars were sold here through the years!

1951 Ford Customline:
R32,000 - Durban

I fell in love with this immediately. A great shape which holds up really well to the rat rod look.

I can imagine somehow that the V8 might be a little ratty too in reality, but you never know..

R6000 - Pietermaritzburg

Looks like this may have had one owner from new, and I have really started to appreciate the shape as it matures, just like the DS. When I was younger, I hated the look of this car

Fiat 124 Sport Coupe
R28000 - Johannesburg

Fiats and Alfas seem to have survived longer here than in the harsh UK climate, as I see more of them around. Here's a pretty 124 Coupe. I do like the large side windows, which are very much out of fashion at the moment.

I've fancied an El Camino for ages. I think the Coupe-pickup combo is utter genius. I don't particuarly love the '73 El Camino, but it's nice to see that they're around here. I've certainly spotted some nice examples 'live' around Durban too.

OK, so there's loads of beetles and beach buggies for sale here, but this looked like a particuarly tidy one for the price. Nice colour too.

1977 Baja Bug
R15000 - Cape Town

Sticking with the Beetle theme, here's a very nice looking white Baja from Cape Town. It has some great engine, chassis and interior mods too - it appears to be a very pre-loved bug.

Ford Mk2 Escort 1600 Sport
R30000 - Johannesburg

An early Escort would nicely appease my inner boy racer. Neat stance on this one, with 50mm south at the back and 40mm at the front, on 17" rims.

1973 Volkswagen Beetle 1600 Twinport
R11000 - Durban

Yet another bug, with a nice stance and lots of extras. Generally looks clean for the price, but I wonder what state it's in under the skin.. Anyways, a nice looking beetle again.

Chevrolet Constantia Hearse
R21000 - Cape Town

Yep - It's a hearse. Listed as 'ready to work with all fixtures' But I like the front end, and station wagons are always handy for surfboards / mountain bikes / whatever. If the fixtures can hold a dead body, I figure they would hold a bike..

Beach Buggy
R15000 - Cape Town

Beach buggies look 'wrong' if they're too clean, and most of them look too clean in the UK. There aren't that many, so I think those that do exist get over-cared for.. Anyways, here's a great looking SWB with hard top and rack. Rat-look and beach buggies are definitely a good combination!

The Dusi is a cherished event to South Africans, and some of the wedding guests had completed the challenge - one gent 28 times! The range of outdoor challenges in South Africa is huge; from the Comrades marathon to the Argus cycle tour, and many other lesser-known events, such as the Tour de Kruger.

I adore the camaraderie and ‘joie de vivre’ at these kinds of events, having inline-skated the London to Brighton Cycle race in 2008 myself, amongst other manic long-distance skates.

The Dusi is a 120km canoe marathon, run over three days from Pietermaritzburg, down to Durban along the Msunduzi River. Competitors use mainly small K1 and K2 kayaks, which are not really meant for this kind of abuse as the route passes through several rapids and obstacles. Also, the possibility of contracting 'Dusi gut' along the way is sadly quite high from the e.coli in some sections of water. Abby Miedema, the winner of the women's race commented in The Witness that the river hyacinth and reeds also made it difficult this year.

I was there as a volunteer for the charity my girlfriend currently works for; Starfish Greathearts Foundation, an AIDS charity with the belief that helping individuals is as productive as attempting to solve an entire problem.

Starfish Greathearts and the Dusi Committee came up with a great idea back in 2003, to have a 'Charity Batch' of paddlers, who get to leave in the desirable early morning batch in return for bidding on donations to charity. Paddlers today can also choose to donate to DUCT, an organisation aiming to clean the river sustainably, or animal protection charity the SPCA.

The lucky top 60 bidders who donate to Starfish also get their canoe carried out the water by volunteers, made up by a band of boys from a nearby village. And this year, me too.

Another inspiring project which targets individuals is the Change For Life initiative, run by Dusi winner and local legend Martin Dreyer. His aim was to train twelve local lads to complete in the top 50. Today, as reported on Martin's blog, eleven of them finished in the top 43!

Once back in Johannesburg I'll be making use of the Emmerentia Dam nearby the house to explore a new obsession, with the aim of paddling in the Dusi myself, of course helping a cause along the way.
